  • If you want to fly your drone somewhere beyond the US.
  • If you like to fly your drone for commercial/ non-commercial purposes.

When is it NOT Necessary to Register a Drone?

You don’t need to register your drone under the following criteria.

  • If your drone weighs less than 0.55 pounds.
  • If you’re only going to fly your drone indoors, you don’t need to register it.

What Happens if You Don’t Register Your Drone?

You will be subject to civil and criminal penalties if you meet the criteria to register an unmanned aircraft and do not register.

Failing to register may result in,

  • Civil penalties up to $27,500.
  • Criminal penalties fines up to $250,000.
  • Imprisonment for up to 3 years.

  • Then you will get a verification link to your email address. Click it.
    • Register UAS that weigh less than 55 lbs. and more than 0.55 lbs. online
    • Register UAS that weigh more than 55 lbs. by paper
  • Next, you will need to agree to the FAA’s safety guidance list (Check the above Operating Rules).
  • Label your UAS with your registration number. Check here to label your drone.
  • Then enter your credit card details and pay $5 dollars for 3 years validity period.
  • You may notice a 10-digit registration number on the next page.

Drone Registration for Commercial Purposes/ Business

Registering a drone for commercial purposes is easy. Commercial in the sense, drones for aerial photography, real estate, surveying, filmmakers, etc.

Let’s see how to register a drone for commercial purposes. Kindly note that for commercial purposes, you can waive the Small UAS rules by applying to FAA.

Minimum Age Required to Register a Drone

The minimum age required to register your drone for commercial purposes is 16 years old.

Any Certification Required to Register My Drone for Business?

Yes, you must pass an initial aeronautical knowledge test at an FAA-approved knowledge testing center. Here is the list of FAA-approved knowledge testing centers.

Also, you must be examined by the Transportation Safety Administration (TSA).

    • Register UAS that weigh less than 55 lbs. and more than 0.55 lbs. online
    • Register UAS that weigh more than 55 lbs. by paper
  • Then click agree to the FAA’s safety guidance (Refer the above operating rules) to proceed further.
